Nissan X-Trail 4x4
What Car? rating - 4 out of 5
FOR  The 2.2dCi SE won best compact 4x4 in the What Car? Car of the Year 2005 awards. Able chassis and sophisticated four-wheel-drive system make the X-Trail a fine drive, on- and off-road. Recent overhaul has added more equipment and safety kit, and the interior is practical.
AGAINST  Neither as rugged-looking as a Land Rover Freelander nor as stylish as a Toyota RAV4. The cabin may be practical, but the mish-mash of trim materials and fabrics looks awkward. The petrol engines need more pulling power, too.
